Where to Spray Perfume: 7 Places and a Method That Make It Last

Pulse points, clothes, hair and the right distance: small changes in how you apply perfume that add hours to it.

How you apply a fragrance changes how long it lasts and how it smells. These seven places and a few habits make a clear difference.

Seven places that work

  • Sides of the neck: warm skin that carries scent upward.
  • Behind the ears: a classic spot that stays protected.
  • Wrists: easy to reach and they move with you.
  • Inner elbows: warm and less exposed to washing than the hands.
  • Chest: under clothing the scent rises slowly through the day.
  • Clothes: fabric holds fragrance longer than skin. Test on a hidden spot first, since some perfumes can mark light fabrics.
  • Hair: hair carries scent well, but alcohol can dry it. Spray into the air and walk through, or spray your brush.

The method

  • Moisturise first. Fragrance holds better on moisturised skin. Use an unscented lotion.
  • Keep the bottle 15 to 20 cm away so the mist spreads instead of pooling in one wet spot.
  • Spray after a shower, on clean, dry skin.
  • Two to four sprays are enough for most fragrances. Strong ambers and ouds need less; light citrus scents can take more.

Is rubbing your wrists really wrong? It will not ruin your perfume, but the friction and warmth make the top notes disappear faster. Spray and let it dry on its own.

In Saudi weather

In summer, apply lighter and put more on clothes than on skin, where sweat and heat shorten the life of the scent. Before a long evening or a wedding, add one spray on your clothes just before you leave rather than many sprays at once.
