Why Does a Fragrance Last Longer on Some People? The Secrets of Longevity and Projection
Longevity, projection and sillage explained, and how skin, heat and air conditioning change the way your fragrance performs.
Two people spray the same fragrance in the morning. By noon one still smells great and the other smells of nothing. The fragrance is the same. What differs is skin, weather and how it was applied.
Three words worth knowing
- Longevity: how many hours the fragrance stays on your skin.
- Projection: how far it reaches from your body while you wear it.
- Sillage: the trail it leaves behind you when you walk past.
A fragrance can last all day and still sit close to the skin, or fill a room for an hour and then fade. Decide which matters more to you before you judge a fragrance as "weak".
Why your skin matters
Fragrance holds better on moisturised skin and fades faster on dry skin. This is the most common reason the same bottle performs differently on two people. An unscented moisturiser before you spray is the simplest fix.
Heat, humidity and air conditioning
Heat makes fragrance evaporate faster. Outdoors in a Saudi summer a fragrance projects strongly at first and then disappears sooner than you expect. Humid coastal air, as in Jeddah, tends to make scents feel heavier and louder, while the dry air of Riyadh and long hours in air conditioning dry the skin and shorten longevity. In practice: lighter application and fresher scents for hot outdoor days, richer scents for evenings and cooled indoor spaces.
The fragrance itself
Citrus and light fresh notes are the first to fade by nature. Woods, amber, musk, vanilla and oud stay much longer. A fresh citrus fragrance that lasts four hours is doing its job; it is not a faulty bottle.
You may simply have stopped noticing it. After a while your nose gets used to your own fragrance and stops reporting it, even though people around you still smell it. Ask someone before you respray.
How to get more hours
- Moisturise first, then spray.
- Spray on skin and a little on clothes; fabric holds scent longer.
- Do not rub your wrists together.
- Store the bottle away from heat and sunlight. Heat is what damages perfume, which is why we ship chilled.
